PR, 7th Aug 2024: The appointment of former Pakistani cricketer Waqar Younis as an advisor to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has come under legal scrutiny.
Citizen Mashkoor Hussain has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court, through attorney Nadeem Sarwar, challenging the legitimacy of Younis’s appointment making him, the federal government, and the PCB as respondents.
Hussain’s petition raises concerns about the process by which Younis was appointed. It alleges that the PCB, under Naqvi’s administration, bypassed standard procedures, casting doubts on the board’s governance
The petitioner highlighted similar instances where the PCB appointed foreign coaches, Gary Kirsten for white ball cricket and Jason Gillespie for red ball cricket, under questionable circumstances.
The core argument of the petition is that the appointment of Waqar Younis is unlawful because it did not follow the proper protocol, specifically the failure to advertise the position in newspapers and print media which is violation of article 18 and 2-A of the PFF constitution.
Hussain is urging the court to annul Younis’s appointment due to this procedural oversight.
The controversy follows the PCB Chairman’s announcement on August 5, where Naqvi introduced the domestic Champions Cup and disclosed Waqar’s new role as an advisor.
This announcement has since sparked a legal action, as stakeholders and citizens scrutinize the transparency and fairness of the board’s hiring practices.
The Lahore High Court’s decision on this matter could have significant implications for the PCB’s future administrative decisions and its adherence to procedural norms.
