January 21, 2023: Pakistan’s tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq has qualified for the third round of the men’s doubles event in the ongoing Australian Open.
Aisam and his Serbian partner Nikola Cacic won their second round match on Saturday against 15th seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin by a scoreline of 7-6 and 7-6.
Aisam and Nikola will face top seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in the third round.
It must be noted that Aisam’s best performance at the Australian Open, where he has been regularly featuring since 2010, came in 2018, when he qualified for the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles event. Meanwhile, he was knocked out in the second round in the previous two occasions.
On the other hand, this is Cacic’s fourth appearance in the main draw of the men’s doubles event. He was ousted in the first round in previous three occasions.
Murray´s heroic run over in round three
Andy Murray´s 4:05 am finish eventually caught up with him at the Australian Open as the Briton bowed out in typically defiant style to Roberto Bautista Agut in round three on Saturday.
The 35-year-old Murray was clearly feeling the effects of his epic five-setter in round two, which started on Thursday but ended in the early hours of Friday.
The 24th-seeded Spaniard Bautista won 6-1, 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-4 and faces unseeded Tommy Paul of the United States in the last 16.
´Stressed´ Garcia fights back to avoid shock
Caroline Garcia fought back after a disastrous first set to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open on Saturday and avoid a massive upset against world number 158 Laura Siegemund.
France´s Garcia won 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in 2hr 10min to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open for the first time since 2018.
“She played a great match, she was able to read me very well,” said a relieved Garcia, the fourth seed.
“I was getting more stressed and at the beginning I was super nervous.”
